| PRINCESS KATIE & RACER STEVE HEADLINE KIDSTOCK CONCERT JANUARY 31ST
Calling all princesses and race car fans, gear up for an afternoon of music and magic at Weston’s 6th annual Kidstock -- a family-friendly concert sponsored by the Weston Women’s League (WWL) at the Weston Intermediate School Cafetorium, 95 School Road, on Sunday, January 31st from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Kidstock will feature two award-winning performers including the NYC-based husband-and-wife team, Princess Katie & Racer Steve, who’ll bring their mix of rock, funk, and swing music for both kids and parents to enjoy. The band was a showstopper last summer at Westport’s Levitt Pavilion and is sure to deliver a high-energy, interactive show as Kidstock’s headliner. Danny Magic, who has been featured on Good Morning America, also returns to delight the crowd with his unique brand of magic and humor. Princess Katie & Racer Steve started out performing at New York area children’s hospitals to brighten spirits during the holidays. Today, they’ve become a staple at key children’s events in the Northeast and beyond. Parents appreciate the group’s positive lyrics, promoting good stuff like being honest and trying your best, while kids love the band’s skits and playful sound. Parenting Magazine raved, “The sweet, strong vocals, silly skits and gentle morals will appeal to kids and parents.” The duo strikes a balance between teaching positive values and conveying a sense of adventure. Princess Katie & Racer Steve are the lead vocalists, backed up by Space on bass and Crash on drums. Critics often compare Princess Katie’s voice to an upbeat Natalie Merchant and the rock group has quickly become a favorite among 4-8 year olds. Their first album, “Songs for the Coolest Kids” was a “top pick” by both Parenting and Disney’s Family Fun magazines while their sophomore CD, “Fast & Feisty” is also a family favorite. “Princess Katie & Racer Steve offer a fun-filled day, while Danny Magic has plenty of tricks up his sleeve to captivate the crowd,” said Leslie O’Carmody, Kidstock’s Co-Chair. “Girls will adore Princess Katie’s gowns and tiara and boys will relish Racer Steve’s rock and roll style,” added Cindy Sherlock, event Co-Chair. Kidstock is a truly a community effort as many sponsors have supported this Women’s League event. Thanks go out to Dr. Mark Goldenberg of Brian Balance Achievement Center, Aspetuck Valley Country Club, Pepperidge Farm, Stop and Shop, Beth Berkowitz and Kristin Adams of Camelot Realty, Kempo Academy of Marital Arts/Westport, former WWL President, Dawn Egan, Melissa and Doug (toy company), Dr. Ralph Hunt of Wilton Hospital for Animals and many others for their donations. The event’s net proceeds will support both Family and Children’s Agency (FCA) in Norwalk and Shepherd’s, Inc. of Bridgeport. The FCA donation will fund a baby shower for expectant and new mothers, where attendees receive a basket of newborn items and are treated to speakers disseminating important medical and childcare information. Shepherds Inc. will use the monies to provide high school tuition and mentorship to an underprivileged youth. Kidstock tickets are on sale at the Lang’s Pharmacy at the Weston Center and are $12 per person in advance/$15 at the door. A group discount is also offered for interested parties: buy 5 tickets and get the 6th FREE. There is no admission charge for children under one. Tickets may also be purchased mailing a check made out to the Weston Women’s League to WWL, P.O. Box 1113, Weston, CT 06883. | Thanksgiving Delivered to Neighbors in Need Weston Women’s League
NOVEMBER 16, 2009 (WESTON) -- As Thanksgiving ‘09 draws near, so does the need for a holiday feast for approximately one hundred families and elderly in Weston. Weston Social Services will provide Thanksgiving baskets for these neighbors with the help of the Weston Women’s League (WWL), whose members will gather goods and assemble forty baskets. League members have already collected non-perishables, but are asking the community for additional food donations. Emmanuel Church, St. Francis of Assisi, the Boys Scouts and other town organizations are coordinating food drives for the baskets as well. Individuals are also welcome to create and donate Thanksgivings baskets as part of this outreach. A donation box listing desired items is located at Peter’s Market near the exit. Canned coffee, apple cider, and teas are among these items as are produce, fruit, bags of potatoes, and pies. When shopping for your own holiday fare, consider making an extra purchase for the League’s donations box. “The Thanksgiving baskets are indeed a group effort that the League is proud to be a part of. This year, more than ever, families need assistance over the holidays and we’re hopeful the community will help us reach our goal,” said Stacey Tucker, League member and Thanksgiving Baskets Chairperson. The food collection will last through Sunday, November 22nd. Those interested in making donations can do so at Peter’s Market or can contact Stacey Tucker at stacey@staceylu.com or 203.246.8797. The Weston Women’s League is dedicated to promoting a sense of community through its strong commitment to civic services, fund-raising for local charities, and social/cultural activities. NOVEMBER 13, 2009 (WESTON) -- The holiday season is upon us, and with it a time to give of ourselves. The Red Cross is asking Fairfield County residents to literally rise to the occasion by donating blood Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday, November 28th, The Weston Women’s League (WWL) will sponsor their annual blood drive at Norfield Church Parish Hall, 64 Norfield Road, between 8:15 and 1:00. The event falls on Thanksgiving Saturday, when the focus has traditionally been on travel, shopping, and post-holiday clean up. The Women’s League suggests shifting gears by considering a blood donation instead. Thanksgiving unfortunately marks the start of a downward trend in blood collections that lasts through New Year’s. Thus, the need for all types of blood remains great during the entire holiday season. “The Women’s League is honored to once again, host this event which can save lives in Connecticut. We know the holiday weekend is a busy time, but also recognize that one pint can save up to three lives. A large turn-out can help bring the state’s supply back up to a healthy level,” said League member and Drive Chairperson, Jaime LaLonde. LaLonde also noted statistics show there’s a 97% chance that you’ll know someone in need of a blood transfusion during their lifetime. Blood transfusions are used by a variety of people -- cancer patients, burn and accident victims, and those undergoing preventative surgeries. The blood drive has taken place for over two decades with the Women’s League at the helm, though it remains a community effort. Peter’s Market is a sponsor and will provide refreshments for donors. And the community at large is to thank for their upcoming blood donations. “Every donor counts -- it’s a wonderful way to make a difference in someone’s life,” added Blood Drive Co-chair, Andrea Diamond. Eligible donors must be at least 18 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in generally good health. Tips for a successful donation include drinking extra fluids -- such as juice and water -- the day prior to the blood drive and eating breakfast before giving blood. In addition, donors should not do strenuous exercise before or after donating nor drink hot liquids, smoke, or chew gum just prior to their donation. Remember to also wear comfortable clothes and to relax. Donors are eligible to give blood again after a 56-day wait. To minimize lines, donors are encouraged to make an appointment by calling Jaime LaLonde at 917.575.5468 or the Red Cross at 1.800.448.3543. An additional contact is Andrea Diamond who can be reached at 917.539.4862. Drop in donors are welcome. For more information, visit the Red Cross Connecticut Region website at www.bloodct.org. Interested blood drive sponsors should also contact Ms. LaLonde. PHOTO CAPTION: Staff members from sponsor, Peter’s Market of Weston, help spread the word.
