Helen Keller, who lived near Aspetuck Corners on the border of Easton and Weston was a wonderful author and amazing person despite being blind and deaf.

As a community we strive to follow her good deeds as she said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

Weston Women’s League Accepting Applications from

Non-Profits

OCTOBER 5, 2009 (WESTON, CT) -- Fairfield County non-profit organizations are invited to apply for financial funding from the Weston Women’s League (WWL).  The WWL is accepting applications from area non-profit organizations that want to be considered for a donation from proceeds of our annual 2010 spring fund-raiser to be held on April 10th.  This is refered to as the Spring 2010 Cycle!

The continuing theme for the Weston Women’s League is Women Helping Women.  Recipients of the spring fund-raiser have traditionally focused on programs or services that help women move beyond their current circumstances through education/literacy programs, as well as organizations that deal with basic family needs.

The event each year donates from $500 to $5000 to each of the selected charities.  Past beneficiaries have included Mercy Learning Center, Project Return, Caroline House, and Dress for Success.

The Weston Women’s League (WWL) was founded in 1972 to promote a sense of community through dedication to civic services, fund-raising and cultural activities.  The WWL has grown to be a cornerstone of philanthropic and educational endeavors and has distributed over $500,000 to many Fairfield County charities.  Applications may be obtained on the League’s website at www.westonwomensleague.com.  All applications must be received on or before November 6, 2009.   For additional information, contact WWL Philanthropy Chairperson, Heather Pemberton Levy at 203.557.4897 or hpembertonlevy@gmail.com.

KIDSTOCK CONCERT BENEFITS CHARITIES

JUNE 19, 2009 (WESTON, CT) The Weston Women’s League’s Kidstock concert held this past February raised approximately $2300 for local charities while kids rocked out to the tunes of Princess Katie and Racer Steve.  The young audience was also captivated by the performance of children’s entertainer, Danny Magic.  Chaired by Valerie Blatnik-Sigel, Lori Barshop, and Michelle Zwack, the event was hailed a success as it helped Westonites beat the winter blues, while raising much-needed funds for local nonprofits.

Kidstock’s beneficiaries include Family and Children’s Agency of Norwalk, The Connecticut Association of Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities also of Norwalk, and Positive Directions of Westport.  FCA will use the monies to fund the agency’s efforts with new mothers, CACLD will put it toward for programming for those with learning challenges, and the Positive Directions donation will enhance their teen substance abuse program.

The Weston Women’s League has distributed over $600,000 to Fairfield County charities since its inception in 1972 and continues to spearhead philanthropic endeavors in the community.  For more information about  the League or sponsoring a fund-raiser, contact  Tammy Roberts or visit www.westonwomensleague.com.

WESTON WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Hosts Summer Luncheon

JUNE 29, 2009 (WESTON, CT) – The Weston Women’s League invites current members and newcomers to their annual Summer Luncheon on Thursday, July 16th to celebrate the past year’s endeavors.  It’s the perfect opportunity to bring a friend or for those new to town seeking connections and community involvement.  All are welcome.

The Weston Women’s League was founded in 1972 by resident, Karin Gianitti, and a group of local women who sought to help neighbors in need.  The League is now 130 women strong and has donated approximately $600,000 to Fairfield County charities since its inception.  Though the League has contributed to charities beyond our borders, it has also donated funds to town nonprofits such as Weston Social Services, Weston Senior Center, Weston Warm-up Fund, Weston Education Foundation, Weston Park Project, Weston Library, Weston EMS, Fire, and Police services, Weston Historical Society, and others.

Current WWL President and 4-year member, Tammy Roberts, said, “The League acts as a life-line to the community and I’m proud to take the helm this year as we continue our philanthropic ventures.”   General membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and the volunteer projects are many and varied.  The League’s enrollment is ongoing and members must be 21 to join.  The organization is diverse, as it is comprised of single and married women, the working and stay-at-home sets, as well as those whose children are grown. “ Collectively, the group is a volunteer powerhouse from which lasting friendships have sprung,” added Roberts.

This year’s luncheon was held at the home of Jackie Kupper – a scenic setting on shore of the Saugatuck River.

80s PARTY RAISED AWESOME FUNDS

June 23, 2009 (WESTON, CT) - Madonna, Gordon Gekko, and Pat Benatar – icons of the 1980s and attendees at the Weston Women’s League’s “Totally Awesome 80s Party” – as costumed guests, that is.  The League’s annual spring fund-raiser, held on April 4th at The Meadowlands in Darien, harkened back to a time when A Flock of Seagulls rocked and leg warmers ruled.  Among partygoers were preps clad in pink and green, metal-studded vest wearers, and those sporting “scrunchies” and fluorescent accessories.

Acid-washed denim abounded as guests danced to Duran Duran, Devo, and Def Leppard, taking breaks to swing by the scotch and cigar bar, sponsored by Norwalk’s HBSC Westport Avenue branch.  Silent and live auctions also delighted the crowd; the showcase of items was impressive as was the generosity of vendors and the community at large.  Both are deeply appreciated by the Women’s League and were indeed instrumental in the night’s success.

The results are in and monies tallied, totaling over $14,000 to disperse to area charities.  Among this year’s recipients are AmeriCares of Stamford, Caroline House of Bridgeport, and Weston’s own Department of Social Services.  AmeriCares plans to improve their Well Women’s Clinic in Norwalk, while Caroline House will supplement its Mother and Child Literacy Program.  The funds given to the town of Weston will go toward the Food Pantry and Social Services programs.

Led by co-chairs, Francine English and Anne Bigin, the 80s Party doubled as a social outing to remember and a fruitful evening.  The League’s philanthropic efforts are year-round and benefit those in need throughout Fairfield County.  For further information about the organization or to sponsor a charity event, contact WWL President, Tammy Roberts, or visit www.westonwomensleague.com.
